Can Long-Distance Relationships Work?

Afternoon gents, it’s Max from the Young Gentleman’s Guide here! So, this has become a very popular question in today’s youth and dating world, especially since we’re in the golden age of social media: can a long distance relationship  work? This is a question that even I’ve had to ask myself from time to time, and I’m hoping to answer that question for any of you young gents who may be in this situation.

Now, unsurprisingly, the question of whether or not a long-distance relationship can work is an incredibly difficult question to answer. The reason being because romantic relationships by their nature are very different depending on the people involved. Some people are perfectly fine with long-distance relationships. They think relationships like that are much more romantic, plus it’ll make it all the better when they finally see their significant other in person. A very “absence makes the heart grow fonder” mentality. On the other hand, you have those people who can’t stand a long-distance relationship. They find it incredibly stressful since they have to work twice as hard in order to make the relationship work. They also just can’t stand not being able to actually see the person all the time. Now, while I completely understand both perspectives and  think they both have some valid points, I myself tend to follow the former ideology. I believe that under the right circumstances and between the right people, a long-distance can certainly work. That is, however just my mindset.

Sad as it may be to say, the question about long-distance relationships being able to work may not even have a definite answer. Sorry to any of you coming to this article expecting an answer set in stone, but finding an answer like that to a question like this really isn’t possible. As I said before, romantic relationships by their nature vary greatly depending on the people involved in that relationship. People express love and affection in different ways, and on top of that, people just have their preferences. You and your girlfriend will most likely have very different relationship compared to your best friend and his girlfriend; maybe a long-distance situation works with you and your girlfriend, but not with your best friend and his girl. So while I can’t give a definite answer as to whether or not a long-distance relationship can work, I can at least offer this advice: talk to your significant other about it and just use common sense. After all, the most important part of any relationship is communication. If you and that special someone can come to a reasonable conclusion about your long-distance relationship, whether you end up staying together or not, all the more power to you two.

Sorry if this article seems too vague or not very focused, gents. Like I said, this is an extremely difficult question to answer, and my answer to the question may be different from yours. At the end of the day, the most important things to keep in mind when coming up with your own answer are communication and common sense, those will both go a long way. In any case, I hope you enjoyed reading today’s article. Bishop Robert Barron’s Guide to Manliness

Afternoon gents, it’s Max from the Young Gentleman’s Guide here! Before we begin, I’d like to address the obvious: this article will most likely come off as extremely biased, because I am a devout Catholic and will be very partial to the words of a bishop. Just know going in that I don’t mean for it to come across that way. I’ve heard Bishop Barron speak quite a few times, whether in person or on video, and I believe he has a lot of great things to say, even things not pertaining to religion. So I’ll try to stay as objective as possible and just share why the auxiliary bishop of Los Angeles and Santa Barbara is a great figure for young men to look up to, even if you’re not religious. So before this article turns into a full-length novel,  let’s get started!

1.  He is incredibly well-spoken

Any of you reading who have heard Bishop Barron speak probably already know this, but for those of you who haven’t, you should know that this guy is extremely eloquent. He may actually be one of the great orators of our generation. He always knows exactly what to say, when to say it, and how to deliver it. The way he speaks is also very sophisticated. When he starts speaking, he has no flubs; no “ums” or “uhs” or anything. He gets straight to the point and does whatever it takes to stick to that point. It actually reminds me of Cardinal Timothy Dolan, the Archbishop of New York, but I’m getting off-topic. The point is, Bishop Barron is incredibly well-spoken, and his eloquence is more than enough for any young man to look up to.

2. He’s smart, but not arrogant

Another thing that’s fairly obvious to those of us who have heard Bishop Barron speak is that he is incredibly smart. He is incredibly well-versed in theology, philosophy, science, and sociology, and he incorporates all of that into his sermons and his teachings. That being said, he is also incredibly humble, which baffles both me and my father, who looks up to Bishop Barron even more than I do. Bishop Barron obviously doesn’t know everything, and he isn’t the arbiter of all things right and wrong, but he never claims to. All he wants to do is offer his point of view and help give people clearer views on the Catholic tradition. Yes, he is inordinately smart and believes what he’s saying is right, but he doesn’t claim to know everything or try to force his beliefs on anybody. He knows that there is a fine line between being confident and being arrogant, and Bishop Barron knows not to cross it at any point.

3. He never backs down from what he believes in

It’s clear that as a bishop, Bishop Barron believes in and defends the teachings of Jesus Christ and his apostles, but as I said before, he doesn’t try to force those beliefs down everyone’s throats like how most of the mainstream views most Christians. However, even though he doesn’t do that, he still does not waver from his beliefs in the slightest. He only uses his faith to as a force of good in the world, and even though he might have his fair share of haters or naysayers, he only uses them as motivation to further strengthen his faith and continue to spread friendship, love, and tolerance.

4. Quotations

While this may not be a specific reason as to why Bishop Barron is a great man to look up to, I thought it would be a good idea to list some of the things he’s said in the past to display how smart and eloquent he is. (Here’s a link to show I’m not BS’ing any of this)

“Meek – free from the addiction to ordinary power – you can become a conduit of true divine power to the world.”

“In the Dei Verbum, there is a great statement of Vatican II: The bible is the word of God but in the words of men.”

“The English word sin is derived from the German term Sünde, which carries the connotation of sundering or dividing.”

“If we really want to change the current course of our culture and challenge its guiding ideas, then we need to start with the author of that culture. That means examining man himself.”

“At a certain point in American history, nobody would have imagined the possibility of slavery being overturned. Very smart people, very morally plugged-in people, were defenders of slavery in 1830, 1840, including Christians at a very high level. Politicians at the highest level didn’t think slavery could be overturned in 1820 or 1840, and yet now slavery is unthinkable. It’s the same with civil rights. In the 1930s and ’40s, a lot of very high-placed people, including religious people, wouldn’t have imagined the overturning of Jim Crow, but now it’s a fact.”

“Whatever threatens innocent life takes priority, morally speaking. Yes, I get the fact that people are especially preoccupied with abortion, but [the Church’s position] doesn’t mean we’re shills for the Republican Party. It means we’re trying to bring all of life under the aegis of radical love, but there’s a prioritization.”

So there it is! These are just a few of the ways that Bishop Robert Barron is a wonderful figurehead for young men to look up to, religious or not. With how well-spoken, intelligent, and humble he is, there is certainly a lot to admire about this man of the faith. Even if you’re not Catholic, or even religious, I encourage you to take a look at some if his videos, he has a myriad of wonderful things to say. I’ll link to a selection of some of my favorite videos from him down below. In any case, I hope you enjoyed reading today’s article. Max Winters: a true gentleman in our modern world

Afternoon gents, it’s Max from The Young Gentleman’s Guide here! So, it’s been a pretty crazy week for me with 4th of July celebrations and family visiting from out of town. This led me to fall behind a bit in my writing, but I didn’t want to go without an article today, so here we are! This is an interview that I had with A Vintage Athenian a few weeks ago all about being a gentleman in the modern age. It was incredibly fun and a great experience for both of us! In any case, please be sure to share the post, follow the blog, follow The Young Gentleman’s Guide on FacebookTwitter, and Instagram, and support us on Patreon. The Gentleman’s Guide to the 4th of July

Afternoon gents, it’s Max from the Young Gentleman’s Guide here! So, today’s article will really only apply if those of you reading live in the United States, (and I’ve been seeing a lot more readers from outside the U.S. lately) but today I wanted to give you not necessarily a guide like the title may suggest, but just ways that I’ve celebrated America’s Independence day in years past in the hopes that I can give you readers some inspiration in case you need to find something to do (except I won’t be including things like parades or fireworks shows, since those are both essentially a given). So without any further delay, let’s get started!

1. A barbecue

bbq

It’s no secret that one of the cornerstones of American culture is the typical barbecue, whether it be at a park, a picnic area, or even your backyard. So it’s also no surprise that one of the best ways to celebrate the 4th is such a barbecue. Get together with some friends and family, grill some burgers and hot dogs, have some corn on the cob, and maybe have a beer or a patriotic cocktail (thanks to liquor.com for that inspiration)! This is just the perfect carefree way to celebrate the America’s independence, not to mention the most delicious!

2. Family get-together

1531924_10203501376848585_1766328272996334677_o (1)

This may or may not go hand-in-hand with the aforementioned barbecue, but it’s still a great way to celebrate the holiday. This is a tradition we hold dear in my family. We always get together at my grandparents’ vacation house in the small town of Independence, California to celebrate with everyone (except we can’t do it this year since so many people are so busy). But in any case, getting to spend Independence with friends and family is sure to make the celebration that much more jovial and exciting!

3. Listening to American music

jazz

Obviously one of the biggest cornerstones of the culture of any nation is its music, and the United States is no different. In my opinion, the best way to show appreciation for our country and its independence is listening to classic American music. And I’m not talking about typical American pop like Miley Cyrus’ Party in the USA, I mean songs and artists that truly represent America and its freedom. Things like Bruce Springsteen’s Born to Run, the Glenn Miller Orchestra’s In the Mood, Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue. For those of you who are interested, I actually have a 4th of July playlist on Spotify that would be great for your 4th of July celebrations!

4. Honoring your American Heroes

Glenn Miller Post
Glenn Miller, one of my personal American heroes

This one might sound a little strange, but bear with me. Last year on 4th of July, I decided to put up a post on my personal Instagram showcasing a collection of people who are my personal American heroes. I believe that doing something like this shows a much better appreciation for America, its freedom, and its people. If any of you reading this decide to do something like this, please be sure to let me know, I would be very happy to see a post like that spread!

So there we have it! Those are just some of the ways I’ve celebrated Independence Day in the past, and I’m hoping this at least gave you an inspiration for something you might want to do to add to the celebration of America’s independence. I hope you all have a very happy and safe Independence Day, stay safe, drink responsibly, and be very careful with fireworks! I hope you enjoyed reading today’s article. Please be sure to share the post, follow the blog, follow The Young Gentleman’s Guide on FacebookTwitter, and Instagram, and support us on Patreon. And on that note, this is Max from The Young Gentleman’s Guide, and God bless America!

Our Favorite Fragrances (Part 2 of 2)

Afternoon gents, it’s Max from the Young Gentleman’s Guide here! So this article is actually the second half of a collaboration I’m doing with my dear friend Elena, owner and head writer for A Vintage Athenian. We have two articles coming out today, one on her blog and one on mine. So if you missed the first part of this list, be sure to check it out right here! And if you just came from there, then welcome! Entries 7 and 9 will be presented by Elena and entries 6, 8, and 10 will be presented by yours truly. So without any further delay, let’s get to the rest of the list!

6. Red 360° by Perry Ellis for men

Perry-Ellis-360-Red-Mens-Eau-de-Toilette-Spray-1.7-Best-Price-Fragrance-Parfume-FragranceOutlet.com-Details_grande

The very first cologne I’ve ever used, this fragrance is a perfect fit for pretty much any occasion! Relatively cheap, yet still very classy, this fragrance is a great place to start for those of you who have never used cologne before. One thing it has going for it is its wide range of ingredients. Its top notes consist of citrus and juniper berry, middle notes consist of red apple, sichuan pepper, red leather, and amber, and base notes consist of sage, oakmoss, and sandalwood. This blend of scents makes for a perfect sweet and spicy fragrance that works for just about anything!

7. Diamonds and Emeralds by Elizabeth Taylor for women

116133

This one is another favorite of mine which I wear in class or when I visit friends or relatives. It’s definitely something more casual and affordable too, but it still has a very beautiful scent! This fragrance was released in 1993 and its main accords are white floral. Its top notes consist of so many ingredients! White rose, gardenia, apricot, fresh mandarin, juicy peach, sage, hyacinth, orange blossom and green accords. The heart is enriched with floral sweet jasmine, lily of the valley, carnation, seductive tuberose, rose, magnolia and Tiger lily while the base notes include vanilla, amber, musk, patchouli and tonka beans. Of course as every Elizabeth Taylor fragrance, the bottle is extremely elegant and gives you that old Hollywood feeling!

8. Aventus by Creed

218368

Definitely the most interesting fragrance on this list, this one is meant to be a tribute to Emperor Napoleon, with ingredients and notes dedicated to different aspects of his life. Such notes include “Pineapple, his favorite food; Blackcurrant from Corsica, his hometown; and Ambergris from the ocean, representing his navy.” On top  of that, middle notes consist of rose, dry birch, and Moroccan jasmine, and base notes consisting of oak moss, musk, and vanilla. This is meant to exude a sense of class and elegance, perfect for if you’re attending any high-end affair. The only downfall is that Creed Aventus is not very cheap, but according to those who use this fragrance, you’ll absolutely get what you pay for!

9. La Vie Est Belle by Lancôme for women

252866

This fragrance used to be, and still is, my favorite since it was released in 2012! Not only is its aroma impressive, but its name gives you such a positive attitude towards life and that’s what made me buy it at the beginning! Its main accords are mostly sweet with its main ingredient being iris! The top notes consist of black currant and pear while the middle notes include orange blossoms and jasmine. Finally, the base contains tonka bean, praline, patchouli and vanilla. La vie est belle in French means ”life is beautiful” and the concept of this fragrance was to promote natural beauty and  happiness! It wants to give a positive outlook on life, by focusing on joy in small things!

10. La Nuit De L’homme by Yves Saint Laurent

298613

Whether you’re looking to snag some digits, or are planning a special night with that special someone, this fragrance is a great choice not just for those occasions, but it also works for any season! It’s the perfect blend of sweet and sexy. The top notes consist of almost entirely cardamom, middle notes consist of bergamot, Virginia cedar, and lavender, and base notes consist of Vetiver & Caraway. Again, a perfect choice for date night or even just a night on the town. Anyone who uses cologne will say that this one is an essential, and this one is absolutely at the top of my list!

So there we have it! That’s our list of our favorite fragrances and colognes/perfumes. While this list is obviously much more opinion-based than a lot of our other lists, but hopefully this will give you readers some inspiration as to what fragrance you may want to try out! I want to say a huge thank you to Elena for her contributions and her wonderful writing. Again, if you missed Part 1 of this list, be sure to check it out on A Vintage Athenian and show it some love! In any case, I hope you enjoyed reading today’s article. Please be sure to share the post, follow the blog, follow The Young Gentleman’s Guide on FacebookTwitter, and Instagram, and support us on Patreon. And on that note, this is Max from The Young Gentleman’s Guide, and I’ll see you next time!
